I have a 1987 Evinrude XP150 that has developed a miss, it appears throughout the throttle range but is most prevalent at wot. On a recent fishing trip the engine performed very well, I had rebuilt the carburetors just prior to the trip and was pleased with the results. There appeared to be an electrical issue as the tach and the trim gauge were acting up. The tach would read at idle and with some throttle but as the rpm's increased it would not display at all. The trim gauge was very erratic, each time I would make an adjustment the gauge would jump to the end of the scale (both directions depending on the input), it also appeared that I was not getting full movement of the trim motor during takeoff and when up on plane.
The biggest problem appeared on the 5th day. Running at wot it began to miss and cutout, at one point it was as if a switch had turned off the motor, this lasted for a full second maybe two the motor was dead silent and all power was lost, power returned but continued to miss. At this point I was pretty concerned but continued on to a cove to fish, the main engine was switched off. This was a mistake, I tried to start the motor but was unable to get it to fire. For several minutes it cranked but would not start, being several miles from a put in point and getting dark I got on the trolling motor. After 10 minutes or so I tried the big motor again and it started right up and we hurried back to the dock.
I apologize for being long winded but I suspect that all of this may be related. As far as troubleshooting goes nothing has been done, I checked and cleaned the plugs when taking care of the carbs and they still looked new having only several minutes of run time while on the muffs. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
