Evinrude V4 Looper Quickstart issues

Sound like you are on the right track....see...its the dumb things.....I bet you'll be fine now!!

Sure hope so!! Thanks for helping point me in the right direction. I am going to sand down the grounding surface and re-install everything again. In the manual it actually says: "Carefully inspect the stator mounting surface and retainer screw holes for signs of varnish or corrosion. For proper operation, the stator MUST have a clean metal to metal contact with the powerhead and retaining screws." In my case, it was paint!!!!! Makes sense that the issue is coming from the power coil though. Since it is AC current I can see how it is making that SCR switch fluctuate and activate without the 12v DC wire connected. It also makes me feel much better that your friend had the same symptoms and had stator failure as well.

If that STILL doesn't do it, I will send the flywheel, timerbase, stator and powerpack to CDI and have them bench test them all.

I had a similar issue with 2000 Ocean Pro 200, I going to say check the power coil side of the stator. This send power to the QS and ignition circuit, I replaced my stator and all is good now.

And this helps too. Thanks Chasobx. This is sounding more and more like a stator issue.

I have no doubt you got this licked with the stator....I'll bring the beer to celebrate! :)

BAHHHHH!!!!!!! So I took the flywheel off, AGAIN!!! Cleaned up the ground to stator. No love. But, at least I know that I have a good ground now :)

I talked to Clark at CDI. He is THE man when it comes to these ignition systems. A very hard man to get a hold of. He told me that some motors just misbehave with QS and he believes it is RFI.

After I went through the list of issues that I have gone through, he told me he was pretty sure that I had a bad ignition coil somewhere, leaking RFI into the system. Could be because I haven't tried to change them. Luckily for me, I have 4 new coils at home that I am going to try.

He also said that for some reason the QL78YC's may give some feedback, and to try the QL78C's instead if the coils dont do it.

His last suggestion was to swap the orange and orange/black wires, and if that cures it just leave them that way.

He also told me that if I disconnect the "advanced" coil off the timer base it should cause NO harm, but he would only do that as a last resort.

OK...this is serious now. Bottle of Makers Mark...or Apple Pie Moon Shine to wash this one down. RFI makes sense...Are the grounds for the coils good? Clean also with no paint?...I can't believe this was a common problem that had no solution.

Yea grounds are all clean. The epoxy is lifting on all 4 coils by the grounds, but there are no cracks in the plastic. I have 4 new CDI ignition coils and spark plug wires. This is the ONLY part of the ignition system that I have not changed, so I have high hopes. I am going to slap the coils on and start her up tomorrow. Ill let ya know how it goes. If this doesnt cure it, I am disconnecting the advanced coil harness and kissing QS goodbye. End of story!!!!!!!!!

Clark at CDI always says it a stator problem!!! :D The lower unit could be locked up and he would say its a stator!! :D
I will look this weekend to see if I got some parts and does your motor have the 40 amp system option or is it 16amp???

Thanks fazt. It is actually the 9 amp system. E130txaor

Update:

I put on brand new ignition coils and spark plug wires, along with new plugs. The problem is STILL present. But, now the motor starts up on super cold days even with the timing skipping back and forth for the first 5 seconds. I have chosen to ground out the white/black wire and advance the throttle during start ups. I have checked/replaced all of the ignition components to not only try and remedy this issue, but also for good measure with this new powerhead.

So, I guess the powerpack is very sensitive to RFI, but I am not going to be concerned with this issue anymore. Just ground it out and be done with it. Not worth keeping me off the water any longer!!
