Ok so I had to replace my water pump on my Evinrude 35 hp model E35RCTS. After taking the lower unit off and putting it back on when I crank it up it is stuck in reverse. I am totally lost please somebody help!

Did.you reconnect the shifting linkages.
I did it has the rod that comes down from the motor and the other end comes out from the lower unit I hooked it back up and when I shift with the lever up by the motor is see the rod moving up and down but doesn’t come out of reverse. If I have it Un hooked and try to push the lower rod down sometime it won’t go down unless I turn it a certain way? Is the rod coming from the lower unit suppose to turn or just the nut on it?

Make sure that the LOWER shift rod is fully screwed into the lower unit.----Do not turn the lower rod when connecting to the upper rod.

Turn it as far as it will go. To answer your other question, it often is necessary to twirl the prop when shifting it on land (not running).

It seems to just continue to spin not sure how much I have to keep spinning I got confused with the answer about twirling the prop when shifting

You have twirl the prop to get the gears aligned so they fit together. Then they snap into place. If the engine is running, the gears are already spinning so they align themselves automatically.

....as long as you are spinning/turning the lower rod by hand you can't do any damage. Turn it until it stops/bottoms out. I think Racerone is suggesting that you possibly somehow backed the lower rod up/out....which got it out of adjustment. If the lower rod was adj too far out that would have it stuck in reverse.....even with the shifter in the forward position. So.....turn the lower rod down as far as it will go. IF it doesn't bottom out in a reasonable distance then you will need to find out why it won't.....stripped threads? Rod completely backed out and you aren't actually threading it in farther as you turn?

if I try to turn the prop when it is in gear will it mess the gears up?
Trying to turn the prop by HAND is not going to damage the gears. Turning the prop, which in turn will turn the gears, will allow the gears to engage/disengage easier as you move the shift rod. (Assuming the shift rod is adjusted to the point that the gears CAN disengage)

Clockwise, when looking over lower unit, check your engine manual, there might be a rod height adjustment that needs to be done

Sounds like you took the lower shiftrod out of the yoke in the gearbox? You may need to pull the carrier so you ccan put it backin the yoke just dont pull the propshaft you will see once the carrier is out what you need todo?

Ok so a lil update I got the canister off and with my luck the shaft only has maybe one thread left on it looks the the rest of it is in the yoke. Now the problem I have is getting the shaft out I would’ve thought it would’ve screwed out but no luck! Anyone have any ideas?

Were are not sure of what a " canister " is.-------To get the bearing carrier out you have to remove 3 screws and then the carrier pulls out.

??----The lower shaft assembly is listed at $ 326 and yoke is about $ 44------There must be a way to fix this.----At least I would !!

There is a shaft on ebay for $20 and you shouldbe ableto removethe broken stud out of the yoke easy enough. Just take the yoke up to the hardware store i suppose you can weld a stud on the shaft if you feel the need? Search #325529 on ebay.
