"Well, I just bought a used boat, and the thing just woudln't idle correctly. So I took it to a local shop.
First called me to tell me that compression was good, somewhere in the 150 in all three, so I was real happy. The repair shop basically told me that the charging system on the motor was incorrectly hooked up and this needed to be replaced. Along with the fact that I am down at 1000 ft and want to fish with it up at 8500 ft. So I managed to scrape up the cash for carb work, water pump, (since the bottom end was being done for the water pump, might as well do the gear oil). I thought I was into it for about 850.00 bucks or so, which was a little much for me on my budget.
Then he sent me some pictures and explained to me that there was water in the exhaust. And then came another 750.00 bucks for head gasket and exhaust plate gaskets, thermostats, etc, etc.
Here is where my questions to all of you are. I have had some experience rebuilding my old 351W and then a Chevy 350 block in my time, I used to rebuild my CR250 (2 stroke) all the time. Its really just the carb work that I set out to have this shop do, I REALLY cant afford the bill. But since it sounds like most of the issues have been identified to me, and with the good compression, that means that a majority of the power head is in good condition.
Since the lower end is off (I remember working with a friend that the Evinrude lower was hard to get off because of the weird linkage) how hard is it really to take on this task.
Its been awhile since I did any motorwork, but like I said, I already have a list of what needs to be done, Now I simply need to execute on it. I can find the gaskets right here on this site, as well as the impellor and such, I have a full manual for it, and basically, unlike a car where ALOT of the work is acutally getting the motor disconnected, and then all the valve train,
with help from this site and others like it, someone want to give me an idea of how hard it really be to replace the head and exhaust gaskets, re-do the water pump (with the lower end already off). Once I got all that done, I would probally pull the existing Jets and used a carb rebuilding kit and ask for your help with the correct jet size for the altitude change.
Really in a bind here, I cant really afford the labor on this at this time. I figure I should at least be able to do some of it.
Thank You."
