Evinrude 75 needs work

"Well, I just bought a used boat, and the thing just woudln't idle correctly. So I took it to a local shop.

First called me to tell me that compression was good, somewhere in the 150 in all three, so I was real happy. The repair shop basically told me that the charging system on the motor was incorrectly hooked up and this needed to be replaced. Along with the fact that I am down at 1000 ft and want to fish with it up at 8500 ft. So I managed to scrape up the cash for carb work, water pump, (since the bottom end was being done for the water pump, might as well do the gear oil). I thought I was into it for about 850.00 bucks or so, which was a little much for me on my budget.

Then he sent me some pictures and explained to me that there was water in the exhaust. And then came another 750.00 bucks for head gasket and exhaust plate gaskets, thermostats, etc, etc.

Here is where my questions to all of you are. I have had some experience rebuilding my old 351W and then a Chevy 350 block in my time, I used to rebuild my CR250 (2 stroke) all the time. Its really just the carb work that I set out to have this shop do, I REALLY cant afford the bill. But since it sounds like most of the issues have been identified to me, and with the good compression, that means that a majority of the power head is in good condition.

Since the lower end is off (I remember working with a friend that the Evinrude lower was hard to get off because of the weird linkage) how hard is it really to take on this task.

Its been awhile since I did any motorwork, but like I said, I already have a list of what needs to be done, Now I simply need to execute on it. I can find the gaskets right here on this site, as well as the impellor and such, I have a full manual for it, and basically, unlike a car where ALOT of the work is acutally getting the motor disconnected, and then all the valve train,

with help from this site and others like it, someone want to give me an idea of how hard it really be to replace the head and exhaust gaskets, re-do the water pump (with the lower end already off). Once I got all that done, I would probally pull the existing Jets and used a carb rebuilding kit and ask for your help with the correct jet size for the altitude change.

Really in a bind here, I cant really afford the labor on this at this time. I figure I should at least be able to do some of it.

Thank You."

The cost of those repairs seem

The cost of those repairs seem rather high to me. Purchase a service manual at this site (see top of page)and go at it yourself.

"Thanks for you comments, alth

"Thanks for you comments, although I dont expect it to be as easy as a motorcycle motor, I would expect it to be closer to that than a car engine. I mean, its all right there in front of you, easy to move around, etc, etc.

1 question, Its a 65 that has had a 75 HP power head put on it, can someone identify to me "What" years evinrude 75hp power head can go onto a 73 65hp lower, so I know which head gaskets and exhaust gaskets, and thermostat housing gaskets to buy. I want to use the online sites, and well, in 73 there is no 75, and well, at 1975 there are 3 diffrent 75HP models, I am at a lost at what "model/year to look for gaskets for the power head". I guess I will bring it home and hope that I can find serial number on the power head on the top near the flywheel that I have been told to look at.

Thanks, please more people chime in, I am really appreciative of any help I can get/find.

Thank you.

Same goes for buying the manual Joe Reeves, considering that its a 73 lower with a compatabile 75 power head on top, which manual to purchase from the site here?

1500.00 to do it was the last quote. This entailed:

Impeller and lowerend gear oil.
Exhaust gaskets, head gaskets, thermostats and gaskets, carb's rebuilt and rejetting the carbs for 8500-9500 ft elevation, and something electrical (part was like 55.00 bucks or so)(said it was wired wrong and thats why it doesnt charge the batteries correctly).

When the lower unit was taken off, the exhaust ports were extremely WET and goey, from what I have read there are three gaskets to replace to fix this, the head gasket and 2 other gaskets in the exhaust system.

Here is a picture of water in exhaust area. Still dont have it back yet to get head serials, but transom mount tag is 65373

"John I am in the same boat as you. I am in the process of rebuilding a 1985 115 hp and have the same experience with cars and scooters. I will have to replace bearings, rods , pistons and a head. I feel confident with the support of this forum, the seloc manual and alot of photos for reassembling. I have found alot of issues are similar on all motors in this forum. Good luck and keep posting."

well as i know u should have w

well as i know u should have water in the exhaust housing this also allows for water to cool the exhaust as for the repairs i have done a repair similiar to yours and total cost with tax was 850.00 so 1500.00 is high.
