Evinrude 235hp

hI,

This is my first post

I don´t know a lot about outboard engines , this will be my first

I have an evinrude 235hp v6 2 stroke motor, my father gave me this as a gift

My father bought this outboard new, and Used in 2 boats until he changed to inboard

I recently bought a 21feet boat and I want to use this 235 outboard

The last time the outbard started was about 10 year ago. (only to spin the engine)

I already bought some parts:

1.- plugs
2.- 1 coil (just in case)
3.- thermostat
4.- water pump
5.- fuel pump

I want to buy:

1.- engine gasket set
2.- carbs gasket set with floats
3.-regulator

I have some question in order to buy another parts:

1.-stator,
my father told me that this outboard dont charge properly the battery, I will check but I will buy a new regulator, I red that this engine came with 10 amp stator, I want to install a car stereo with 4 speakers on the boat, I know that exist a 35amp stator, it is possible to instal the35 amp on my 235 if mine came with 10 amp stator, what other part I need to replace in order to work properly ?
I want to use 2 marine batteries with isolator

2.- gauges
I cant found the original omc gauges that came with this outboard, then I want to buy a new set of gauges, Im confused here because I dont know about how many cables tach I need, and what gauge I need ?

1.- tach- how many cables or connector ? 12 ?
2.-speedometer - I supose that any brand with sender will works for the boat
3.- 2 volts meter , 1 per battery
4.- tilt gauge
5.- fuel gauge
6.- temperature gauge, this engine have oem temperature sender ? or I need to adapt
7.- oil pressure , same question, have oem sender or I need to adapt 1

3.- repair manual, I bought an online manual in pdf format, its huge 600 pages, but is not easy to use, I will print it, but maybe I will buy a clymer manual, is a good manual ?

4.- torque wheel- on manual says that the torque wheel is needed to properly set the timing, I dont know the part number ?

I have a lot of question

please help me

thanks in advance

Torque wheel or test prop ?---Timing usually does not need adjusting for the life of the motor.-------No oil pressure gauge for a 2 stroke engine.

Stop buying parts until the engine is checked out. Charge the battery. Start by fogging the engine since it has sat for 10 years. Read the old spark plugs' burn color when removed for compression...all should be medium to dark brown. Trip the lanyard kill switch and perform a compression test 3 times on the engine w/the throttles held open. Record all of the readings. You want over 100 PSI on all cylinders and no one cylinder should be 10% less than the highest reading.

If compression is good install new spark plugs, the new fuel pump and fuel lines, a new impeller and thermostats...it may have two; one for each bank. Remove the fuel line on each carb and use spray Seafoam to fill the carbs and let them soak for 48 hrs. before firing the engine...it will smoke heavily but it is okay. Empty and clean the fuel tank if necessary. Borrow a 6 gallon portable tank, add 2.6 oz. of quality TCW-3 oil per gallon of w/Shell 93 octane. If it is oil injected add some oil to the tank and mark it with a line so you can tell if it is pumpin oil after it runs awhile.

You may have to rebuild the carbs if it runs rough. Verify all cylinders are getting good spark...it should jump 7/16" w/a loud snapping blue spark. That should get you started...others will chime in to help.

Thanks for all your answers, very useful, i follow your advice.

i will post the serial number of the engine this weekend

I have another questions, please help me:

1.- what is the correct grease and tool to lubricate the tilt motor,... .?

2.- reeds: what is time life ?

3.- what tach is the correct one for my application ?, how many poles ?

???----The tilt motor is not greased, does not have a grease fitting?------------The factory original reeds generally last for the life of the motor.

Evenrude power trim oil

my mistake, what are the parts that needs to be lubricated ?

Probaly works for nothing this image, but is the same engine, I will post the serial number

Look for some zerk (grease) fittings at the major pivot/swivel points especially the steering cable...it may need a lube fitting installed if it is stiff. Use a marine waterproof grease and pump it in until you see the fresh grease oozing out.

something like this ? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pro-Boat-Gr...adio_Control_Control_Line&hash=item589c7d333b

*stator- my engine came with 10 amp stator, could be possible to install a 35 amp ?, if yes, what other parts I need to replace in order to work with 35 amp stator ?

* float gauge tool, this tool work with 235 carbs ? http://www.ebay.com/itm/EVINRUDE-JO..._Accessories_Gear&hash=item2a1ea0826e&vxp=mtr

* seafom, how many spray bottles I need ?

won't work on zerk fittings. One spray can of seafoam will do it.
hey if anyone still checks here i just bought a 1985 champion 20 foot super v it has an 1985 evinrude 235 on it an just had voltage regulator go out an stator to does anyone know where to pick one up cheap? I just had the vro system disconted an mixing oil now so. Does anyone know anything else i should worry about?

You will need a newer model donor motor to convert this as you will need the crankcase end cap, flywheel, stator, rectifier, stator bolts, and wiring harness as the red main lead is 1 gauge larger.
