Evinrude 175 Lower Unit Overhaul?

My 1985 Evinrude 175 has been sitting several years. I resolved to get it going again and was getting ready to replace the water pump. When I drained the oil from the lower unit, half of what came out was water, then the rest was nasty black oil. Obviously one or more seals is bad and I am assuming that any bearing that has been soaking in seawater for several years needs to be replaced. From my research, it looks like $1500 or so to get somebody to rebuild it for me. I see replacement units on line for $900 plus an upper shaft. Anybody have experience with those? I can follow instructions and do the job myself, but I am wondering if I really need all the special tools listed and if so, what they will set me back. I also know that the shims in particular have to be done right or the whole thing may come apart. I would welcome any thoughts.

Better jump on that $900 SIE lower unit as they went up $300 Monday

Thanks for the info. That is a wrinkle I was not expecting. As I slept on it last night, I decided to fill it with fresh oil, knowing that this is not a solution, then proceed to overhaul the carbs and ensure everything is good with the top of the engine before I invest in the bottom. I would hate to have a shiny new lower end on a motor that will not run because of something else. I know at some point the investment in repair could exceed the value of the engine. I guess I am back to the drawing board. Are these SIE units OK?
