Gday guys, I'm new to the world of boats. I've got an Evinrude 140hp that I've had out on the water a couple of times, and for the most part runs well.
I had it out a couple of weeks ago and every time I restarted the engine it started fine, until one time it didn't. When I turned the ignition I would only get a click from the solenoid, no movement from the starter motor. It sounded like a flat battery. The motor had only been off for a few seconds as it had stalled for no apparent reason. No lights or anything were on and draining power. After 15 minutes of stuffing around I gave it one more try and it started right up. No more problems that day.
Yesterday I prepped the boat to go fishing, turned it over and it started right up. This morning it started fine, I put it in reverse as I was unloading it from the trailer and it stalled. When I went to restart it I got nothing but a click from the solenoid. Took it home and there's no movement from the starter.
I think the starter motor is dead. Could it be the battery? Tilt still works fine so battery seems to have power and my multimeter says the starter motor is getting 12.5 volts. Can I run jumper leads off my car battery to rule out battery? If it's my starter motor can I service it or do I have to replace it? Or am I completely wrong and is something else the problem?
Thanks
