Envaporust in old 1995s Mercruiser 3.0 cooling system

Hello all…

I’ve acquired a couple of ~1996 runabouts with old Mercruiser engines, that I’m trying to resurrect.

One is a Maxim. The engine runs, but it quickly overheats.
I’ve replaced the impeller, which didn’t look bad, but the water pump hose coupler
looks like it was carelessly jammed together. I replaced the thermostat, which looked bad,
incredibly old and rusty and crusty. Looking into the thermostat housing it looks pretty rusty.

I’m thinking of circulating some Envaporust rust remover in the Mercruiser cooling system.
I’ve had good success with Envaporust on other kinds of projects, and I’ve hear of people
putting it in automotive cooling systems. The problem is the Mercruiser doesn’t recirculate coolant.
How can I make sure the Envaporust gets everywhere it needs to go, and nowhere it shouldn’t go?
Do I need to worry about it going through the exhaust valves into the cylinders?
I basically need to completely fill the cooling system, and let it sit overnight.

Any advice? Do I just pour it into the thermostat housing and call it good? Or is this a Nono?

The other boat is a Bayliner. The engine supposedly had run, but had the manifold replaced.
It was stuck, but after I replaced the corroded battery and starter cables and the starter,
the starter broke it loose; I guess it wasn’t very stuck. When I looked into the valve cover oil fill
it looked pretty rusty inside. I DON’T think I can just pour Envaporust in there and have it do it’s magic!
I don’t think it would be good for the bearings, rings or cylinder walls.
Envaporust is supposed to be safe for chrome and such, but it does tend to roughen surfaces.

I soaked my 5.0 MPI in Evaporust. Removed a cooling hose from the thermostat housing and used a flexible hose and funnel. The stuff will freeze so be careful.

Is that likely to be a problem in a 1996 Mercruiser 3.0?

I know it does tend to roughen machined surfaces on hand planes I soaked.
I hear on people putting it into cylinders of stuck engines, but that doesn’t sound like a good idea.
‘Putting it in the cooling system sounds better…
