I believe there should be 4 fuses, one for each Oxygen sensor so give them all a thorough inspection.
The below information is the best I could capture out of the Mercruiser PCM 112 service manual that fits your fault codes… number 16 indicates Output fault The ECU has detected a problem when trying to output a signal to this.
PCM 112 Fault Tables
Fault
Code | Description | Type Code | Fault Types | Notes |
| 822 | Wideband 02 sensor heater port S1 (precatalyst) | 4 | Range high | This could indicate an extremely high exhaust temperature. If all other faults have been addressed, this indicates a bad sensor. To diagnose, replace the suspect sensor with a known good sensor, or switch the port and starboard sensors to determine if the fault follows the sensor. |
| 5 | Range low | If all other faults have been addressed, this indicates a bad sensor. To diagnose, replace the suspect sensor with a known good sensor, or switch the port and starboard sensors to determine if the fault follows the sensor. | | |

To troubleshoot the fault codes 822-16 and 842-16 on your Mercury 4.5L engine, start by checking the O2 sensor connections and wiring for any damage or corrosion, as loose or faulty connections can trigger these codes. Since the issue returned after a brief absence, it may indicate an intermittent fault or a sensor malfunction. Additionally, inspect the exhaust system for leaks, as they can affect O2 sensor readings. If you've recently changed the oil, ensure it’s at the correct level, as low oil can sometimes cause sensor issues.
