I need help with an Apex inflatable outfitted with a 2009 Honda 40hp outboard. I was having problems starting the motor after it had been sitting for several months. Battery was getting low so I left it on a battery tender for several weeks. When I rechecked the battery looked to be completely dead so I charged with a regular charger. When I went to start every thing was completely dead. I checked the battery and I have just over 12v. I checked the fuse, good. No power to the starter solenoid. I was moving some wires under the dash and the power to the switches came on. Motor tilt worked. all other electrical looked good. As soon as I turned the key I heard a click from the motor and everything, the whole system went dead again. the motor never turned over, just a click. Is there any power cutoff system from the engine? The boat is 3 years old and has about 10 hours on on the motor. Wires look in good shape. Any ideas where to start looking.

First off, pull the battery and have it load tested. Sounds like it is bad. Then make sure your battery cables are completely clean and attached tightly.

The battery is less than 1 year old. I took it to the battery store and they did a load test. They said it was in new but still good. I will clean and tighten the connectors.

Hi Davidz, did you get to the bottom of the issue?

Was it the battery or something else? I am getting that similar "clicking" sound . The engine won't start via electric starter nor will the electric trim. I'm going to check all the connections again, but thought you could shed some further light on what happened?

I just re-cleaned battery terminals and every connection to the battery. This did the trick. both trim and starter working again.
