Dropped Screw, Could it Go into Gears?

Hello,

I have a Mercury 125 ouboard, 4 cylinder 2 stroke. I was simply emptying the bowels on my carburetors and I dropped a screw. I have spent hours looking for it but I cannot find it. It isn't magnetic so a magnet won't work to get it. I even made a hose attachment I hooked to my vaccume to try to suck it up.

My main question is could that screw go down into the gears or something that could cause damage? In looking I can't fully tell but it looks like it could drop into gears. If it does drop into gears what is the best way to get it? Do I need to take the motor off the boat and hang it upside down, and hope it falls out?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Nope...wont get into gears but could get sucked into engine!!!!

Thank you so much for the quick reply. So I haven't done much work on outboard engines at all and I cant figure out how to upload an image here. But I saw it fall to the bottom, below the engine. Is this a concern I should have with where it fell, or should it be fine and I just find a new screw.

Thanks again for all your help.

The "gears" or lower unit is a sealed unit and nothing gets "dropped" in.
Now water can work it's way in if the seals happen to go bad.
Get a new one.
Depending on the year and model it might have metric threads??
