Do I need a new engine?

I have a 1989 3.0L Mercruiser; had zero compression in cylinder #2, 75 psi in #3; #1 and #4 were OK (135/140 psi). Pulled head and head gasket broken between #2 and #3, and valve on #2 was pretty beat up. There were some cracks in the cylinder head so I definitely need to replace it. There was also a small visible crack on the block between #2 and #3. It's an old boat only used on our 77 acre pond, so not the end of the world if it suddenly breaks down. My questions: Can the small block crack be repaired (or ignored), or do I have to bite the bullet and replace the engine? For a replacement engine, any thoughts on the GM Vortec models? Many thanks for any insights.

You have an anchor. Before you buy anything inspect the boat's hull, floor and stringers for water logging and rot. If the boat is good then get a good used engine or for a little more money buy a reman longblock. You will need to determine the condition of the exhaust manifold/riser, water circ. pump and other parts...if these parts need replaced then consider a complete drop-in and go engine.

This is speaking from experience. I was in your shoes 3 months ago debating the same thing.
As crappy as this answer is .. nope, the block can not be saved. Don't even try. Trust me. Replace
the block and save yourself many more months to follow of frustration, money and your sanity.
Someone might suggest to you that you stitch it, Jb weld it or try to have it repaired.
No, no, no. It doesn't work. You must replace the block.
