I have a 1989 3.0L Mercruiser; had zero compression in cylinder #2, 75 psi in #3; #1 and #4 were OK (135/140 psi). Pulled head and head gasket broken between #2 and #3, and valve on #2 was pretty beat up. There were some cracks in the cylinder head so I definitely need to replace it. There was also a small visible crack on the block between #2 and #3. It's an old boat only used on our 77 acre pond, so not the end of the world if it suddenly breaks down. My questions: Can the small block crack be repaired (or ignored), or do I have to bite the bullet and replace the engine? For a replacement engine, any thoughts on the GM Vortec models? Many thanks for any insights.
