1989 Donzi Regazza 4.3, cobra-Tried to get out today but she overheated, first time it ever did that. I am in the process of replacing the raw water pump/impeller. My question is should the impeller driveshaft turn freely. I didn't think it was suppose to but it does. Do I have bigger issues?

Impeller drive shaft is an extension of the main input shaft. If it turns freely that would lead one to think the shaft has sheared.

Thanks for the quick reply, that was my thought also but I put it back together and started it up. Water is coming out of the two holes on the side of the drive so the impeller is spinning properly right? Still overheats I am thinking it's a stuck thermostat. I tried pulling on the shaft to see if it was sheared but it wouldn't pull out. I love working on the old boats but his one is trying my patience.

I don't think you can make that assumption.
take the hose off the thermostat housing and check flow - preferably in the lake, not on muffs or you're just checking the city's municipal water system
