Crusader Damper Assy

I have a 1987 Sea Ray with 454's and 10-18-04 velvet drives. I need to replace the damper assy P/N cru97334. I have bought two from seperate crusader suppliers and neither one looks like the original one that I removed. Does anyone know if the old stock is still available or has it been superseded. I really want to use the old style, it seems much more robust. thanks MAC

I had to change mine last July and it was CRU97334 as you have listed. It was round and looked like the old one in that it was a little less in diameter than the flywheel, had the springs in the center and the splined center core. What specific differences are you seeing and do the new ones look like each other if not like the old one? My engines are 1992 and call for the same part #

The old style has six heavy springs captured by the hub and there is one mounting hole for each screw on the fly wheel. The new one i just bought has eight purple springs (not as beefy) with a cable looped through them and has 7 mounting holes for each hole on the flywheel (use for use other size flywheels). The actual plate that bolts to the fly wheel is approx .05 thinner then the old style as well.

Gee Mac,

I know mine had purple springs also but it was late July and I just can't recall any other specifics. I doubt I could feel the difference between thicknesses, especially .05 and never thought to check. This was the part number, so... I put it in. As for those mounting holes, I do remember several. Used red Loc-tite though.

Thanks for the input, I am going to use one of the ones I just bought. There doesn't seem to be any old stock around for this items (oh well)

Mac,

I found a closeup picture of my old damper.. It has 8 springs and a steel wire insert. A bunch of holes in a triangular pattern on the outer radius. I tried to post a picture but...I just can't figure out how

Yes sir, that is the configuration of the new one that I have purchased. They might have discontinued the older version before 1992. Is your engine a 454, 350 hp?

Yes...they are 1992 454...350HP By the way: Here is an attached picture of the old one....a bolt let loose and the centrifigal force caused it to fan out and jam against the bellhousing...SLICING the insides like a soft tomato while accelerating from 1000 to about 3000. Felt like I hit an underground telephone pole

Mac did u take tranny out while in water or the boat was on the hard?? Also was the removal very dificult or not? I have to remove my tranny for repairs this week and iam in the water and wonder if it can be done? Same engines and tranny as urs just different boat

Hi, The boat is out of the water. I dont think you should have a problem in the water. See the attached picture. I used 2 saw horses, one to hold up the engine and one to remove the trans. It weighs about 125lbs. You will have to align it when it is re-installed. I'm waiting to final align mine after it is in the water a few days. Should be fun!!! MAC
