Cracked lower unit advice

I just picked a 45 hp 4 stroke and noticed a crack on the lower unit. Is this a problem? Do I need to get it fixed/replaced before putting it in the water? Will oil mix with water through that crack?

Thank you in advance!

If water is getting in, it will show up in the gear oil and or leak out when you fill it.

That’s a nasty looking crack. It likely needs welding up, if that’s possible.

Just my opinion but I don't think that welding that will work out too good because I don't think that the prop shaft holder is likely to seal up good when you put it back together.

Just guessing though.

Good luck.

Need to determine why it cracked.----Drain the gear oil.----Do you live in an area where you have freezing cold weather?.--Possibly cracked due to corrosion products building up in the thread for the big nut.--That can be welded , but care must be taken with threads for the nut.----Water will not get in the oil with that crack.

I just purchased it for a project. The person I got it from had it leaning up against a fence standing vertically, with weight on the prop. That’s how the housing cracked. South Florida motor
