chevy 1978 305 stalling issue

this engine in a 68 sea ray w electric shift. '78 305 chevy 2 bbl. sarted this for the first time today . i ran a clear temporary gas line from fuel pump to gas can. i poured a little gas in the carb and she fired right up. it idled for a couple minutes then died. i sprayed in some carb cleaner and fired up again.. ran for a minute and then died. i repeated this several times and cant tell if the fuel pump is weak or carb is clogged up. in the last couple of month ive read many threads so i did check for a couple thing as follows...1 pulled filter off of carb and surprised it had not been removed by previous owner. 2 viewed the temporary fuel hose that i attatched (clear) and did notice that it did not keep a continuous stream . it was not full seemed to have a fair amount of air in it. not sure if my connection was sucking in air or the fuel pump is sucking in air.either way i thought id post my results and see what you guys would have to say. also i had my seloc manual out there with me and discovered that my rochester carb was not in the book so i got the p n off it and gonna search and find what it is exactly. basically i could get her to run for a couple minutes and rev it up a little and it would sound / run awesome then the carb would sound like it was sucking air and quickly die. whattya think? thanks in advance...dimitri

Make sure the hose is off the bottom can and no water in it remove line from carb put that in a glass jar or something that wont melt like styrofoam remove coil wire turn it over see if you get fuel in the jar I use the glass to make sure its clean getting there then youll no its the carb or pump...Thats a start

If it were me, I would just put on a new carb. You could send yours out for rebuilding ( which it clearly needs) or for not much more, get a new one. A rebuilt carb can often be as good as long as the rebuilder thoroughly takes it apart and cleans it in ultrasonic equipment. Simply tossing it in Safety Kleen won't do. Since the rebuilding route involves a leap of faith, new is the best. A new fuel pump and all hoses and filters is recommended especially if it has not been done since the introduction of ethanol to fuels. If the fuel system is over 5 years old, replace everything.

I may be a little late here but I just went through a similar situation. Similar symptoms as yours. A small piece of dirt made its way up into the carb (quadrajet) and blocked one of the squirters. I'd never torn down a quadrajet before but I learned enough to pull it apart and do some basic cleaning. I put an in-line fuel filter in before bolting the carb back on and running it. My boat sat for a few years before this so some of the crud worked its way out of the tank.

I had the same problem with mine, the previous owner had put an electric fuel pump that didn't have enough
psi to keep the float bowl full while the motor was running over 600 rpm I changed it out for a 4-7 psi pump
and it runs like a top. I intend to find a proper fuel pump and steel tubing ASAP but it will be a winter project.

I would check the diaphragm in the fuel pump and make sure its still up to snuff.
