charge voltage too high

i recently ran into the same issue. i checked battery voltage with the motor OFF. then checked again with the motor running. as it turned out , the voltage gauge was off.

hi there im game fisher with 10 to 12 hours out wide every time i go out i own 200 hp verado 2008 after driving for 30 min the charge jump up to15/16 .5 volts & alarm will go of /the electrice power steering dropes due to the over load volt relay & get very hard to steer some times go with over charge for 1 to 2 hours & comes & go.got 2 new batteries on board motor will start on 1 & not on battery 2 which later after few weeks starts on battery 2 & not battery 1 which later i had to start the motor onlly on both batteries the same time . after my my boat mechanic said i must change the alternator due to a intermited faulty regolator i replacet the alternator& bib not fix the problem .im a motor mechanlc by trade start to check the charging problem my self found bad eart conections from boath earth cables from the batteries to the earth board & board to engine body that fixed my problem which i lived with the last 2 years & hardly use my boat due to my smart boat mechanice which he removed & fit the engine to my boat when i got new pod fitted then

The older Mercs lack any kind of charging voltage control, but they seem to work fine regardless of the scary-high voltages.

Been using them for decades and never lost a battery yet. BUT...I use only refillable battery types in marine applications so I can keep an eye on the electrolyte levels and top the cells off as needed.

Most boaters.when replacing battery(s) will go for what they consider a good reliable battery....in todays world the sealed no maintenance batteries are what they will pick up..thats a no-no if the boat engine has a rectifier only charging system...eventually the rectifier will fail...some electronics will fail or shut off because they sense hi voltage....we have beat this problem to death in many prior entries in this forum so i will not go into theory...most people no longer have the owners manual and if they do it is almost impossible to find the recommended battery...so the fix is as Jeff said......
