Changing Oil

I'm a new owner of a 1995 Crusader 5.7 L engine. I want to change the oil and filter before winter. On my previous boat I used a vacuum pump down the dipstick tube. On this new boat the dipstick tube is much longer and and not straight, it curves forward toward the front of the engine. This will make it nuch more difficult to insert the vacuum pump tube all the down into the oil pan. I did notice that the open end of the dipstick tube (where you insert the dipstick) appears to be male threaded for a standard garden hose. Can I adapt my vacuum pump to have a female garden hose thread, attach it to the end of the dipstick tube, and suck the oil out this way?

Also the label on the engine says to use 40 wt. oil. Is that what I should use, or the more "modern" 15-40 wt?

I'd use what oil Merc recommends.

As for oil extracting, the Tempo Oil Boy has a fitting that attaches to these threads.

One step better, IMO, would be the remote oil drain hose kit installation.
The Oil Boy attaches to this also.
Warm the engine prior... and be sure to run it again afterwards to purge the old oil from the journals.

That's what the threading on the tube is for, just get the oil warm and connect to it and that should do the trick. 40 wt. oil is what crusader recommends and that's all I have been using in my engines with no problems. Some guys have changed and have said they've had good results with the multi-grade oil, I guess it just comes down to what you aer more comfortable with using....Lee
