Can it be welded, is it ok, or is it toast? (lower unit)

1992 johnson 150 fast strike. Marine mechanic says it cant be welded and needs a new lower unit. my question is, can it be welded, or does it even need to be? the broken piece does not go past the bearing carrier. Long story short- lowered motor after winter, water came out the prop with some black oil. pulled lower unit plug and water came out first followed by black oil. put fresh gear oil in and it is leaking out the prop now. before i attempt to pull the bearing carrier and replace seals, what advice do yall have for this lower unit case? is it toast, will it function as is, or can it be welded?

The piece that is broken appears to have a spot for one tab that holds the bearing carrier in.-----So it should be repaired.-----Pressure test the gearcase now to see if there are leaks.----Sound like that piece popped out due to water freezing in the lower unit and extreme pressure did that.-----Lack of maintenance is the cause and it will cost you.------Also the gearcase must come apart to inspect the bearings and gears for corrosion damage.------A welder who understands EXACTLY what he is working on may be able to repair that.----Lesson learned on your part , drain oil in the fall and any water in there means ----SEAL KIT time.

Aluminum has no memory if you weld it will need to be machined if at all possible. I would say get another gearbox and put all the good parts between the two and put in a seal kit. Look on craigslist for acheap motor the same era thats not running you may get lucky.
