Took on a project for a buddy and it’s been a nightmare.

Long story short we ended up ordering new housings and swapping the internals from the old ones to the new ones. The “new” upper was used and showed up looking like someone drilled out the top vertical shaft bearing race. I can’t imagine this is common practice?! Is this upper housing junk?
don’t see how a new race and bearing could ever go back in here. Second pic is of the old housing for reference
