Boat supposed to have an ignition module??

With the cap off, you manually open the points and get a spark from the coil wire? Leave the cap off and turn the motor over w/ the starter and see if you get the same spark. Observe the points in action, with the lead from the coil to a good ground (set a spark plug in the wire end and lay it on the block and see if it sparks to ground). Also connect the dwell meter. Hint: the smaller the point gap, the higher the dwell. Longer time points are closed, the more time the coil has to "charge up". If points are opened too far, then the coil won't have long enough to charge, giving a very short dwell angle. Don't remember the settings as it has been a Looooong time since I messed with points.

If the same spark is present, put cap / rotor back on and do it again. If no spark from plug wires, then bad cap or bad rotor or bad wires. Seen many rotor that shorted out to the middle, into the steel distributor shaft underneath.

Let us know the results.

well lalst night i didnt mess with it much but let my brother c if he can get it going. figured out we werent getting 12v to the + coil from battery and the resistance comes on and drops to the correct voltage wen the key is turned on. so we jumped a wire from the battery to the + coil and we checked all wires at all 8 spark plugs and we're getting spark. so far we've gotten 3 peeps to do the timing jus to b sure its correct and we've all gotten it correct including the firing order. cranks but still wont start.

Do not jump the coil for any length of time if it is indended to be resisted voltage. You will risk damage to it.
Throw in a new condensor while you're at it.

What color spark are you seeing at a good and correctly gapped spark plug????
Are you seeing spark for each time the points break????

If good spark, and if the timing is correct, then it may be lacking the correct fuel/air quantity.

.

yea i am waiting on my friend to order the condenser.

the spark i see is blue and yea i checked the spark plug gap with a gap tool and its at 0.35 which is at spec according to the manual.

and yea the spark is after the points break.

but yea, i will have to check on the fuel and air again next.

Starting to sound like a bad ballast resistor / bad resistor wire here.
