I think you should have at least a multimeter in your on board kit so that you can check the voltage on the batteries.

DITTO!!!!.... if not waterproof, keep in a large sealed zip lock bag with a small desiccant bag. Contacts in meter will quickly corrode to the point that an otherwise good meter is useless... ALL meters have an internal battery REMOVE in the fall and install new in in the spring.
