BF8 8hp outboard carb overflow

Hi all, I noticed on my 8hp (1993) when I squeeze the fuel bulb too much, fuel flows from a small hole in a plastic cover on top of the carb. Is this how it should overflow. I know at this point I've flooded the engine anyway but I thought the float might have shut the fuel off.
Cheers
Mick

You're right, the float should shut off the fuel from coming in the bowl. That is, of course, if you're not squeezing the bulb so hard that you're over powering the valve.

If you feel that you're not over pressuring the hose, then the float valve has probably developed a leak either from wear or deformation due to ethanol content in the gas you use.

If it's leaking, the float valve should be replaced. If the float valve seat is worn then you may need to replace the carburetor.

The only way to know for sure is to take it off and have a look.

The valve is $13.59 and the carb complete is $98.71 at boats.net

Both appear to be in stock and available depending on what you find.

Good luck.

Thanks for that, I know the bulb went stiff on the previous trip, I'm at the boat this weekend so I'll investigate further
Thanks

I have an '81 BF100 10hp with a similar carburetor and this has happened to me several times. My problem was a very small piece of dirt caught under the needle valve so that it would not seal. Often opening the carburetor drain and running some fuel through will clear the dirt and the valve will work fine until next particle. I installed a fuel filter and have not had the problem since. I bought the engine used 14 years ago, have never spent anything on the carburetor, and it is still running fine. I drain the carburetor and gently blow as much gas as possible out of the fuel pump and lines after each use.
