bf5a drain screw leaking

I got a used bf5a outboard engine and I sent it to honda workshop and they did for it a full service (change engine oil, gear oil, spark plug) but after I got it and put it for 2 days I found some oil on the floor and it's smell was strong, after I checked the engine I noticed that the it is from the drain screw. I used it for 2 or 3 times and after each use the leak becomes milky I think it's mixed with water. I called the technician and I explained for him and I asked if he changed the washers he told me it must be changed in each oil replacement and he said maybe the shaft seals must be changed.

any suggestions please?

Thank you.

Sounds like gear oil you are referring to. Did the shop pressure test the lower unit or drop it to change the water pump? If not, then you should get it back there and let them check the unit for a bad seal. If the gear oil is milky, then you want to get it taken care of before you end up damaging the gear case from the water intrusion.

The water pump never changed before.. I don't think its from the seal because after the service the oil that I found on the floor was a pure gear oil and it was leaking from the drain screw hole. if it is from the screw is it possible for water to go through the drain screw in to gear box?

One of my friends told me to put a Teflon tape on the screw and try it what do you think?

There is an ORING underneath the heads of those screws. It is SUPPOSED to be replaced each time the screw is disturbed for any reason. And, YES that is PROBABLY how the water is entering the gear case. IF oil can get out....water can get in.

When the gear case is HOT, there is pressure inside and will cause a leak if the case is not properly sealed. When the gear case COOLS, a vacuum is created internally and water can be "sucked" in through a faulty seal or oring.

Amm ok I am going to change the oil and I got new washers after that I will inform you with the results.. shall I put a Teflon tape on the washer?

If the drain screw itself or the threads in the case are not DAMAGED, then there should be no need for teflon tape. If your gear case continues to take in water after you replace the drain and fill screw seals then you may have a leak somewhere else. The prop seal is the most likely place but the main shaft and shift shaft seals can leak too. A proper "PRESSURE/VACUUM" test would tell the tale.

Good luck.

After I I removed the drain screw I found the problem there is NO washer I can't believe that they didn't put washer when they changed the oil in the dealer workshop. . Anyway I removed the oil and it's almost white because it's mixed with water, I put some clean oil from the upper level hole to let all old oil comes out from the drain hole, and I fill it again.

thanks for all who tried to help me.

Yes, that is bad! It gets harder every day to find , trustworthy, competent shops. Glad it so simple though and I hope it is the end of your problem. Thank you for updating us.
