"Please help, my 45 has been sputtering and has a cylinder cutting out at idle, it has a "dead" spot accelerating but runs fine at full throttle. I have taken it to the shop and asked them to clean the carbs, it helped but I still have this issue. The motor had sit for a couple years and they did tell me the carbs were nasty. Does this still sound like a carb issue?"

"I might add it's a 1994 model with 1200 hours. After the couple years sitting it would not rev without cutting off. The cleaning fixed the rev up but left me with the rough idle (cyl cutting out) and the dead spot just above idle, sometimes I have to feather the throttle through this spot or it will cut off. They soaked the carbs for a couple days but charged for no parts to rebuild, just labor so I assume they installed nothing new. Thanks!"

"Sounds like worn parts in the carb, or the jets might still be clogged a bit. Cleaner alone won't always do it... especially the idle circuit. A lot of folks here talk about having to completely disassemble it to get it really clean.

You replaced the spark plugs, right?"

"Yep, new plugs in it. I thoug

"Yep, new plugs in it. I thought it sounded funny that they soaked them for two days and didn't even need a new gasket to put it back together. One carb I would mess with but three then trying to sync is a bit more than I fell comfortable with."

"Whoever "They" is - that's no way to clean carbs. Only proper way is to disassemble them completely and clean each part separately, and clean out each orfice individually. And if you're going that far, replace the jets."

never soak a marine carb!!!!

never soak a marine carb!!!!
i use an ultra sonic cleaner with yami carb cleaner warmed up

"Thanks gerry,WD and Just in T

"Thanks gerry,WD and Just in Time. The soaking has already happened, what now? I bought the service manual and am probablty going to get the carb manual also (I hear there is one). I will then take advice from Just in time on other post and remove the whole manifold, clean each carb throughly and install new jets and gaskets. While I'm there would it pay to replace the timing belt and adjust the valves, 1200 hours and to my knowledge this has never been done???"

"yes get it done
