BF40 High Idle

I have a 1995 BF 40 that has high idle after running throttle in gear. When I go back to neutral, the idle revs over 2000 for about 5 minutes before coming back down. What can I do to clear this issue up?

Hi,
You might want to inspect the components in the link below. Pay particular attention to the throttle linkage return spring...item #8.
But anything rubbing or hanging against another part could also cause this so check everything out closely.

If this is a remote equipped boat, it could also be the throttle cable hanging up. That cable MUST be "butter smooth" inside it's conduit to allow for throttle return. Over time, the grease in the cable housing starts to harden or dirt gets in there. Sometimes a new cable is the only thing that will fix it.

Also, check out items 16, 17 and 28 in the link below and make sure they are not rubbing or hanging up. Things wear and get "sloppy". Too much movement from wear creates problems like that.

Last thought is to check for a vacuum leak around intake manifold if nothing with the cable or linkage can be found. You can lightly spritz water from a spray bottle around gasket areas while the engine is idling normally. If you hit a spot where the engine tone changes or it sputters, there's likely a leak at that point.

Good luck.
