BF30D with flush mount control… not getting to wide open

Hi all. New to an outboard. Have a 2023 BF30D on my inflatable center console. It has the flush mount Honda controls. Everything is new and just picked up last weekend. Not getting rpm to go above about 3600 or so in gear. Runs up fine out of gear. Went through everything and noticed if I move the throttle control to full reverse the throttle bodies are wide open. If I go to the stop in forward I get a little over half movement on the throttle bodies. No adjustment left on the cables. I would expect to have limited throttle in reverse and full in forward. Engine runs fine, new fuel, and fuel filter. Plugs are good.

Hi,
No expert, just thinking out loud.

i don't know but it almost sounds like the cable is too short.

There are cables available from 5ft to 31ft. Any chance that the installer was handed the wrong length and then made "adjustments" trying to compensate? i would definitely call the place you took delivery from and ask about what they recorded when getting the boat ready.

Also, I know from experience that if the cable isn't secured properly on installation that it can buckle and be permanently damaged causing all sorts of throttle control issues.

Good luck.

I was thinking the same… but it’s perfectly fine in reverse. Same cable, same action. Once it shifts then the throttle cable kicks in. If it was short or long reverse would have the same issue. It seems like in forward it doesn’t have enough movement on the throttle lever. Wondering if the forward and reverse are switched somehow?

It  iS a "push-pull" throttle so I suppose the installer may have put the cable on the wrong side of the lever quadrant but I don't even know if that's possible or would cause this. I've never seen that before.

You said "everything new and just picked up last weekend". Hopefully you already have an appointment to take it back for "adjustment".

Good luck.

Thanks… they’re 5-1/2hrs away, but I’ll be calling Monday morning. Was hoping it may be something easy that I’m missing.

That’s mechanical shifter and carbs?

Put lever in full forward, disconnect at carb end, see if it has more travel or is that what you did already?

Your talking coming up short a few inches, not likely you have a short cable, there must be an adjustment at one end or the other.

Maybe if you explain what's happening to them, they may be able to help you make the adjustment yourself. It's probably something simple that got overlooked.

NSDON always has good ideas and his suggestion might be right on.

Hopefully anyway.

Let us know what you find out ok? It might be helpful for someone else to know what it was.

In your "rooting section" and jiggling the pom-poms:)
Good luck.

I’ll try to get a photo or video. Appreciate the inputs! But whether in forward or reverse the throttle cable has the same movement. When I move the lever to full throttle in reverse it opens all the way, but not in forward. It seems like something is causing a stop when in forward preventing me to go to full throttle. I feel if it was cable adjustment the same would be when it’s in reverse. There’s plenty of cable pull it seems… just the control arm stops short in forward.

But you may not be getting to full throttle in reverse? Or are you saying you get more visible travel in reverse than in forward, not just more power?
Disconnect that end, see if any more travel on the carb connection when disconnected.

More visible travel in reverse. I did not disconnect at the control and see if I get more movement. Will try that.

If the control depicted in the link looks like it matches yours, one of things you might check is item 14. It looks as if it might need to be indexed correctly to allow the handle to travel as it should.

Another thing that gets my attention is the different length pan head screws ( items 22 and 23). Just one of the longer ones in the wrong place could be limiting throttle travel.

Just guessing though.

It’s fixed! Talked to the dealer and he started with throttle cable adjustment… which had no more adjustment as I already knew. Then it hit him as he had one on his bench disassembled… on top of the control and hidden are two adjustment screws/stops. One for reverse and one for forward that limit the throttle handle movement/dwell plate. Had to back the forward one out about 1/2” and voila. Full travel.

They don’t show in jgmo’s link (maybe a slightly different model).

Hope someone can learn from this one in the future!

Well YEAH! THAT'S great! Glad you got it and thanks for the clear explanation!

Boating can be fun....
.....after the repairing's done
