hi bI have a BF25d overheating light comes on and cuts engine ater 3or 4 mins you can restart no probs is it the sensor

A bit more history would help. How old is the engine? When was the impeller/water pump assembly last changed? Salt or freshwater engine? How’s the telltale water stream? Any other details you can add?

You MUST assume that it's overheating until you prove otherwise or you can quickly destroy your engine. As William said, the more info you provide the better for others to consider your issue and offer suggestions.Info such as:

How strong is water tell-tale?

Is outboard a recent purchase?

How long does it run before the alarm starts and de-rate happens?

Did this start happening suddenly?

Did this start immediately after repairs were done?

Has maintenance been kept up? ie: thermostat, waterpump, oil and filter change?

Usual suspects are:

Waterpump not pumping efficiently.

Thermostat not working correctly.

Water intake screens clogged with debris.

Less common causes for overheating are:

Water tube plugged.

Coolant passages mineral coated. (Salt water operation makes this worse)

Engine oil level low or oil pressure is insufficient.

Continuing to run it with an overheat condition WILL cause damage so only do so to the extent that you need to for diagnosis.

Yes, it could be a bad sender but it's usually not.

Good luck.
