BF225 Rough Under Load to ~2600-2800 RPM's; Full Power/Smooth at Higher RPM's

New to this forum... much great info! I am a new owner of a 2005 BF225. My problem seems to be similar but "reversed" from some other reported problems. Under load (hole shot) the engine is rough and low power at low-mid rpm's, but once the rpm's get up to ~2600-2800 rpm's, runs great and at full power all the way up to WOT.

This behavior is consistent now.

Additional history... on a couple prior occassions, experienced rough running at all rpm's which eventually cleared up. (but now experiencing the issue described above)

So far, I have:

  • added Heet to gas tank and burned the rest of the tank; added more gas from a different source
  • installed new spark plugs
  • tonight, I drained the VST. No debris, but was the color of Mountain Dew!

I haven't tested performance since draining the VST. I suspect I have more work to do to address the issue. Thoughts on potential cause? Next steps?

BTW - I ordered the repair manual today.

Thanks!

Where the new plugs NGK IZFR6F11 iridium-tipped plugs? If so, they should be.

If you have an external Racor fuel/water separator, drain it, and consider replacing the filter element if you do not know its history. Then drain the onboard fuel/water separator. Remove and drain the low pressure fuel filter. Replace if necessary, or if the Racor was really dirty and cogged up.

When you get that manual, or from the diagram on boats.net, remove and replace the high pressure fuel filter.

I am concerned with Mountain Dew colored fuel.

After you do all the stuff that Chawk says (which definitely should be done), connect a small 6 gallon tank of fresh (clear) fuel to the Racor and flush the entire fuel system until you get clear fuel coming out of the vapor separator drain.

Try running it on the 6 gallon tank and see if it makes a difference.

If all runs good, it might be wise to pump the tank.....maybe your car runs on Mountain Dew colored fuel better than the Honda.

second changing hp filter and lp filter sounds like issue I had few years back was filter .. all other items you did sounds right on

Issue resolved! Solution was one of (or combination of) the following:
1. replaced LP fuel filter
2. replaced HP fuel filter
3. replaced external fuel/water separator
4. drained VST
5. drained internal water separator

Thanks again chawk_man, hondadude, and aristakat!
