Bf225 dying after running a few seconds

I have a 2004 bf225 that I recently took the intake off of to to replace the spark plug seals . got the engine back together got all the plugs and tubes back on all bolts tight changed fuel filter since it was time anyway ..now I crank the motor up and it runs fine for a few seconds and then dies and does this over and over...I bumped the throttle up a bit and it runs continuously unless you back off the throttle fast if you do it dies again ...cleaned idle air control valve and seamed a bit better not solved ..motor will run now when cranked but idles very low when it was dying earlier and steadily idles up and down before finally quiting ...I don't know what else to check motor ran fine before I tore it down to fix oil leaking from spark plug tube...any advice would be great thanks

Was it the high pressure fuel filter that you changed? It's the one on the back of the engine held in by 3 5mm bolts. If you canged it, did you but the spring that's underneath back in place.

Are you getting any alarms or do any of the lights on the console come on?

First thing I would do is drain the VST.

No I didn't replace that filter and did not drain vapor separator ...the only alarm I'm getting is low water pressure cause my motor refuses to run on muffs I can put it in a body of water and it pumps fine

The high pressure fuel filter is the source of may running and fuel feed issues with the 200/225. Change it. You will likely be surprised how dirty and deformed it is if it hasn't been changed in a while.

As for overheating on muffs - they all do that. There is no way a garden hose can supply enough water to properly cool the beast.

A fuel problem. No mistake.

I changed high pressure filter and drained vapor separator still no change . if I idle motor up it will not die but it continuously idles up and down on it on just a few rpm's . I ran the boat yesterday for a hour and it runs fine just idles funny .thought it could be a vacuum leak but sprayed carb cleaner all around the intake with no change in rpm's

OK. Let's go back to your initial post. You said that you "took the intake off of to replace the spark plug seals." What exactly did you do and what exactly do you mean by spark plug seals?

You also said that you tore down the engine because "fix oil leaking from spark plug tube." I don't understand that. Do you mean the spark plug seat in the head? Provide more detail on that.

Just for grins, what happens at idle when you pump up the primer bulb in your fuel line when you have that slow idle? Do the rpm's go up to normal and stay there a few seconds? If so, you may have a failing low pressure fuel pump.

I took the plastic intake off to get to the cylinder head covers to replace the spark plug tube seals ...if I idle the motor up just a little it won't die but even then it idles up and down . I'm thinking it's getting air somewhere but sprayed carb cleaner all around intake with no change in idle

Problem is, It is not getting air. If the IAC is not opening it will not idle. Opening the throttle just a little defeats the IAC function and the engine will idle.

You may have pinched a hose when you put the intake cover back on. There are a lot a small hoses that do not like to stay in place when you do so.

Also, have someone watch the IAB Control Diaphragm to be sure that it operates as you go to start the engine. It is the silver mechanism at the bottom of part #4 http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard Engine/2004/BF225A4 XA/INTAKE MANIFOLD/parts.html

If not, check the hoses going to the IAB control solinoid.

Mike

How do you check the IAB diaphragm? I also noticed that from the diagram from boats.net that the plastic intake is held on with two different lenghts of bolts and two nuts . I know the nuts are in the right place but the different lenghts bolts I didn't notice . don't know if that would have any effect on anything .I also cleaned the IAC valve when it first started this idle problem so I don't suspect it have anything to do with it but may be wrong
