So I just bought a small boat for my son and the Honda 20 hp serial BAMJ-1003080 starts great, idles great but when you put it in gear it stumbles and stalls...I "goose" the throttle and it eventually will go and runs fine wide open..but when you bring it back to idle it stalls again. My son is new to boating and this won't be any fun for him if i cant get it running right...thanks for any tips you can share...

These are GREAT outboards! None better in this size range in my opinion.

But, if the carb isn't drained regularly, especially if it's gonna sit unused for a few weeks, it will likely need cleaning.

These little carburetors are NOT complicated but they have a few secrets you really MUST know to get them cleaned up and working properly.

If you don't want to tackle the job then buying a new carb is, indeed, an option.

If you are handy with tools then Honda has a book, Honda Marine Carburetion Manual, that has the info you would need to rebuild your carb right the FIRST time.

Also, if this one has a black, rubber cylinder attached to the engine oil dipstick tube, that is called a "fuel chamber". Those things trap water from the fuel and condensation and need to be removed and emptied of all liquid every so often. If enough water builds up in there, it can cause problems with starting and running.

Looks like it does have a fuel chamber held on with a zip tie...I will try that first..also found a recall for the fuel chamber, maybe they will send me a new one for free... https://cdn.powerequipment.honda.co...STER-RECALL_BF15D_BF20D_FUELCHAMBERRECALL.pdf
