BF150 Intermittent Power Loss

I've had an ongoing problem with my port engine where the it will not stall completely but RPM surges up and down erratically. It will generally continue to idle but will not accelerate. If you turn it off and let it sit for a 5 or 10 minutes it will start and run again.

It seemed like a fuel flow issue, and replaced my primer ball, fuel lines, Racor fittings and all filters. I also pulled and inspected the fuel pick-ups: The ss screens are in place and clean. Then I used a vacuum pump (brake bleeder) to pull down each line from pick-up to engine and both will pump to -15" and hold at -5" so fuel lines are tight.

I thought fuel line solved the issue and ran over 80 miles (about 50 ours) fishing last week without a problem. Then then it happened again 25 miles off shore. We let it sit 5-10 minutes then slowly ran up to minimum planing speed at about 3800 RPM (usually run about 4200 cruising) and made in by sunset. Took it out the next day and ran for a couple hours in-shore with no problems.

These are 2004 BF150s with about 350 Hours, and I've never had an issue in 7 years. I would take it in for service but there is no one on the island with a Honda code reader, all say they hate Hondas and sound like "parts changers". May need to find someone to come get it with a trailer.

Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks !

I am pretty sure that I solved this issue. A friend with a Merc 4 stroke had a similar intermittent issue and found it to be the HP filter built into the pump.

I pulled mine and the high pressure fuel filter was pitch black. I also found a strainer (in line filter) on the low pressure side of the fuel pump buried under the intake manifold and replaced that too. Along with the easy one that's in the bowl.

I will be running over 100 miles this week and will follow up with whether this was it.

It seems like many of the performance issues with these bigger Honda's can be traced the the HP fuel filter. This is especially true for the 200's and 225's.
