It refers to the CMP Sensor (Cam position sensor)

Open or Short Circuit in CMP sensor.
Faulty DC! Sensor
Faulty ECM

I know you do not want to purchase a manual, but if you are going to troubleshoot this engine, you may mess it up more than fix it without a manual.

You're right Mike, I am buying the manual on Helm right now. Thanks you so much. The motor will start and run smooth but whether the motor is hot or cold it takes 2 or 3 tries to get it started and occasional backfire during cranking attept. There are 2 straight lines on cams(dohc) and 2 dots. When i set the timing. I get #1 piston top dead center and match the two lines on the cams. Is there something wrong with this procedure?

If you are just checking timing, that will probably work.

If the chain has jumped a notch and you are actually resetting the timing...you also have to align the crankshaft timing mark. In general, the only way I know to reset the timing chain once it has jumped a notch is the remove the chaincover. As you can see there are a lot of other things that you have to take off to get to it.

If your chain has jumped timing, it is time to change the chain, the chain guides and the tensioner.

Since you are ordering the manual, there are about 6 pages on how to remove and reinstall the timing chain. It has several steps. It is not rocket science, but I know of no short cut. I have tried it and was not successful. Someone else may know of a easier way, but I do not know. if you follow the book, you can not go wrong. I have only had to do it about four times. It just takes some time, patience and the right special tools.

If you do this, you will have to remove the thermostats. As you may know, they are different temperatures, so be sure you install them into the proper locations.

Good luck!

Seems like no need. Just walked back inside. When you said cam sensor, I went out there and checked the connection and a prong was broke off. I hope the new one not only clears the error but solves the start up issue as well. Mike, your knowledge is very much appreciative and I wish I could help you somehow. Thanks again and I'll keep the forum posted.

Thanks for the feedback. That is probably your problem.

I am glad you do not have to get into the timing chain.

Have a safe boating experience.
