BF 75 Smokes at start up?

I have a BF75 F 7.5hp (BF75L-1702905) that smokes (burnt oil smell) at start up. It starts right up and runs fine. Will smoke for about 15-20 seconds and then clears up. If I shut it down and wait about 5-10 min it will smoke at start up again and then goes away. Any ideas?

If these motors are stored vertically, most of the time, they have very negative trim. They will almost always smoke if kept that way. If the motor is stored at least level or better still with a slight positive trim, the smoking will probably go away.

The same thing goes for almost all of the Honda motors....even 225's.

Just the nature of the beast.

After the motor is stored horizontally or worse, stored incorrectly.
How long should you wait to start the motor after installing it to ensure the oil has settled?

I do not think there is a time. It is going to smoke.

If stored horizontally, raising the powerhead a little above horizontal might help. If the engine is stored on the incorrect side, then oil is going to be all over the place and probably into the cylinders. If might even keep you from rotating the engine due to hydralock of the oil in the cylinders. Then you have to remove the spark plugs and crank the engine to clear the oil.
