"What is the consensus on service manuals? Should one purchase the original Honda Service manual or go with Seloc service manual? The online option looks intriguing. In my case it is regarding an older Honda Outboard. S#1401242 (I am guessing 1978)
The motor runs great, but has developed some kind of oil leak."

"Depends on 2 things 1)how much you want to spend and 2) do you want it for general maint or a total rebuild.

If you don't mind chucking the bucks, the honda manuals are excellent and pertain to your model alone. They are however written for marine tech's and assume that "you know" alot of things that you may not.

The Seloc's are very good all around manuals. They will however cover a series of motors and some of the pics/diagrams may not be of you exact model. They do however include lists of do's/don'ts, hints and explainations that you don't get in the factory manual.

I have both for the motors that I generally work on and find that Seloc's compliments the factory manuals quite nicely - however that combo could cost you upwards of 150 bucks for an individual motor - may sound like alot, but with dealers charging over 100 bucks an hour for service, they quickly pay for themself...."
