Newbie here, Last week I uncovered by boat to check it out before our annual week long fishing trip to Cass Lake MN. The first thing I noticed was that I had left the switch on. That told me two things, I had a dead battery, I didn't drain the carbs last fall before I covered the boat. I put a new battery in, and it fired right up. Good to go! Nope when I put the boat in the water and went fishing, the engine would only run at about 1/3rd throttle. The resort owner told me to put some Sea Foam in, I did, it didn't help. After reading 27 pages of this forum, I am convinced I have some blocked carb issues The tag on the engine reads, BAUJ 200566. I can't find any reference to that number anywhere in anyone's parts listings. Can anyone help me decipher the code, or help me find a meaningful number somewhere else on the engine?
And, where can I buy the special "security" torx wrenches I need to even start taking this thing apart. Should I just take my torx to work and drill the center out?

You should not need any security torx except to adjust the diaphragm assembly Part #1 (if it needs it) http://www.boats.net/parts/search/H...and Later/BF30DK0 LHA/THROTTLE ROD/parts.html

You just need 10mm and maybe 12 mm sockets and standard tools needle nose, screwdriver, etc)

Once the carbs are cleaned, they should also be vacuum balanced.

Since you are apparently new to this sort of thing, I highly recommend that you purchase the Honda Marine Carburetor Manual.

It would be the best investment that you could make. It has step by step instructions, with great pictures and explanations how the carburetors work. There are a lot of vacuum and fuel lines on that carburetor bank. In any case, be sure to take a lot of pictures of the hose connections and layout as you take it apart, so everything goes back together as you took it apart.

Ditto on getting the carb manual and I see the tamper resistant torx set all over these days. Including Ace Hardware,,,Lowes....and if all else fails...track down your local Snap On or Mac dealer. Mo money but my Snappy set has lasted for years.

Thanks for the replies, you guys. I am going to order the carb manual, and more than likely a service manual. The engine is about ten years old, maybe an impeller would be a good idea too. I am going fishing in a few minutes in the brother in law's boat, so all is not lost. Thanks again for the response, it is good to know people are willing to share their knowledge.

Yes, 10 years old is actually a "young" Honda. Their "service life" can easily be expressed in decadeS with proper care and maintenance. But...a 10 year old impeller is ancient being that most conscientious owners will service them every two years AT LEAST with once a year being the manufacturer recommendation.

If you get the carb manual AND the HELMINC. shop manual you will have spent your money wisely. They are the ONLY way to go for those of us doing our own wrenching.

I ordered both manuals this morning, I haven't started ordering parts yet. Just looking under the cowling is a little intimidating. I'm sure I will spend several hours studying the repair manual before starting to tear it open.
I'd like to thank you guys for the advice that you are willing to spend your own time providing.

Well, that's why we're ALL here. And, you have hondadude in your corner and it doesn't get any better than that!

You will soon be navigating under the cowl with confidence if you do your homework as you say. Also, this is where owning a good digital camera can really be helpful and prevent excessive head scratching during reassembly. Take lots o pics as you go.

Wow! I ordered the manuals on the first of June. Yesterday when we got back from fishing on the fourth, they were on the front step, what great service from 'American Honda Motor Company', through Amazon.com. You guys were right, these are impressive manuals.
I have started reading through the service manual, in the trouble shooting flow chart under Engine speed does not increase., it refers to; (P.5-1) I guess i missed the tutorial on how to use the manual. Where can I find (P.5-1)?

5-1 should be the first part of section 5....which is removal of carburetors. My flow chart says Water or deposits in carburetor, then the flow chart goes to Dissemble and Clean P 5 -1.

I don't know if any one will read this but, I successfully disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled the carburetors. I apologize for not expressing my gratitude to hondadude, and jgmo for replying to my questions before this, and also thank all the others who have posted such helpful advice in other posts, that were also of use to me in my research before attempting the repair.
