"I have a strange problem. Just had the head and valves redone on my AQ125A. Put on a new timing belt and idler. Installed a pertonix kit.
Started it up after moving the distributer slightly and it seems to be purring like a kitten. Hooked up the timing light and it looks like the timing is way off. +60 degrees the timing mark is about 1 1/2 inches away from the timing marks in the plate.
I checked the Seloc manual and couldn't find any help.
I moved the distributer +1 tooth and that didn't work and tried moving it -1 tooth and that didn't work so I am now back to where I began.
All timing marks on the crank, cam, and dist. shaft lined up with the marks on the new timing belt. We double checked the mechanical timing alignment again and it is still off on the ignition timing But it runs?

Anybody have any idea's as to why?

Thanks
Joe"

The 'but it runs' comm

The 'but it runs' comment leads me to wonder about ignition wires to the proper spark plug??? Worth a re-check.

Does anybody have the firing order diagram
I can't find it in the Seloc online manual. It references the firing order illustration but I can't find it.

Thanks
Joe

"THe firing order is 1-3-4-2,

"THe firing order is 1-3-4-2, like in the vast majority of the 4 cylinder engines. #1 is the closest to the bow. Also, the distributor turns clockwise."

"This is really baffling me. I checked the timing belt alignment and it is correct. I have the firing order correct 1,3,4,2 it will star up and run fine but when I put a timing light on it the timing mark is about 2 inches before the 30 degree mark I can't get it close the the marks. the engine will run rough and die if I try to.

does anybody know if it is possible to have the pertronix magnet on wrong? 90 degress off or something it seems like it only goes on one way.

I just don't know what else to check.

I did have the head off and had a head shop mill the head and re do the valves and the shims. Is there something that they could have done that would cause this effect?

Joe"

"It seems to me that the distributor is at least one tooth off. Remove it, move the pinion one tooth clockwise, then reinstall."

I will give it a try tomorrow.

I will give it a try tomorrow. I did try it +1 tooth and then -1 tooth awhile back and it would not start either way. so I went back to this.

"What is the reference to the 30degree mark about? As you face the stern, 2 inches to the right of the 30degree mark should put the timing mark somewhere around 0 degrees btdc while 2 inches to the left of the 30 degree mark.... I question if it would start up and run fine as it would be firing about 60 degrees btdc.

Are you sure you have the strobe on the #1 spark plug wire? Stranger things have happened."

It is 2 inches to the left of the 30 degree mark
which i thought would be about 60 degrees
yes I am sure I have #1 cylinder front cylinder closest to the bow.

there are 12 teeth on the dizzy pinion; therefore, each tooth equals 30 degrees (360/12=30) So, if you want to change timing by 60 degrees you must move the dizzy 2 teeth and I think, as El said, clockwise in your case. Give it a try; you can't really hurt anything - more

Just make sure that the engine is turned to have #1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke before you remove the dizzy. (I'm sure you knew this) After you change teeth, the tip of the rotor will now, more or less, point in the direction of the #1 cylinder and be under the #1 plug wire on the dizzy cap."
