Anitkickback Spring?

What happens if the antikickback spring shorts out? (1972 Johnson 85hp)

I think I didn't have it in the right spot when I put it back together the first time. I believe I have it right now, but I'm not sure what I need to look at.

Thank you.

Jason

Those motors can run backwards.-----The anti-reversing spring cuts off ignition when it touches that terminal.

Thanks.

It's just a temporary thing then? You don't have to do anything, replace anything, etc after that happens?

Do you know where it shorts to? The black/white wire from the power pack to the points?

When motor turns backwards the ignition quits.-----I could show you on a motor here I think.----But find the wiring diagram on line.

Thank you. I've got the basics. Just trying to make sure I'm not missing something. I appear to have a new power pack that lasted about two minutes and I can't find anything else wrong.

Thanks.

This is from memory-----When the motor is rotating in the correct direction, the loop on the spring bumps up against a plastic part (oiler wick??) and does nothing at all. But if the shaft tries to rotate backwards, the loop bumps against the wires connection and shorts them to ground.

Can't get any simpler.

Great. Thank you. That part should be fine then. That's how I read it, but was worried I was missing something.
