Ancient Honda B100 problem

Greetings from a new member in the UK. I have a 50-year-old GRP canal cruiser with a pre-1979 B100 motor. Over the last few weekends, it has become increasingly difficult to start. Now it's refusing to start at all. I'm going through various processes of trial-and-error, and I wonder if anyone could give an opinion on one of today's tests. The background is, I don't think there's fuel getting through. (I dismantled and cleaned the carburetter this morning).

Fuel Pump
If I remove the fuel pump, and press the activating button repeatedly, it pumps fuel. If I replace the pump, remove the spark plugs so no compression, and then turn the engine with the pull-cord several times, no fuel is pumped through.

Is there something wrong with the internal part of the motor that activates the pump, or is this normal?

I'd be grateful for any opinions/ideas - Eran

Not that familiar with this engine, however, the fuel pump should have nothing to do with the starting issue, once primed with the primer bulb it should start easily and then if the fuel pump is not working it will run out of fuel after a couple of minutes. My guess is the choke isn't working properly or the idle jet is blocked. Does it run okay once you get it started?

Thanks for your reply, iang. Your comments make perfect sense and will be a big help in deciding what to try next. The carburetter was cleaned using carburetter cleaner yesterday morning and double-checked yesterday afternoon. All jets clear. The motor is sometimes spitting back through the carburetter which (I think) is a sign of incorrect timing or weak fuel mixture. The timing marks on the motor are correctly aligned. That leaves weak mixture, which could be the case if fuel isn't getting through properly. The motor has, up till now, run well once started, but on my last run it was hesitating, as they do when running out of fuel.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't that motor have contact points and condenser ignition? If so the points gap could be too small retarding the ignition timing which would also cause mentioned symptoms
