Adding AF with muffs

"I am winterizing my 2007 merc

"I am winterizing my 2007 mercruiser 5.0 MPI with Alpha 1 outdrive for the first time. I ran the engine until hot then changed the oil and filter. Opened the single point drain and drained all the water. First off, is this adequate to get all the water out? Then I hooked up a bucket of AF to the outdrive with a short hose and muffs. Started the engine and let it run for maybe 30 seconds and shut it off because it didn't seem to be pulling AF from the bucket and I didn't want to burn up the impeller. I called the yard where I got the boat and they were very reluctant to give me any info but he told me they used a pressurized system to AF the engine because the pump would not pull AF from a bucket like I was trying. Any thoughts on this and should I be using some type of pressure or just add it from above through hoses? Also where this is an MPI engine what is the best way to fog the engine? Thanks in advance for any info and guidance."

Check out the post "Great winterizing video" it goes thru all the proper steps.
Btw. I also have a single point drain and as long as you have the bow right down I believe it drains everything well. I disconnected hoses at the t-stat and poured AF in until it came out the drain then closed it and poured in about a gallon.

Thanks for the info. Sounds much easier than the pressure. I'll check out the video too

this is what the recommendation is for MPI engines from Mercury. I have never heard of just putting oil in the water separating filter.

Fogging Mixture
In a 6 US gal (23 L) remote outboard fuel tank, mix:
5 US gal (19 L) regular unleaded 87 octane (90 RON) gasoline.

64 fl oz. (1.89 L) Mercury or Quicksilver Premium Plus 2-Cycle TC-W3 Outboard oil.

5 fl oz. (150 mL) Mercury or Quicksilver Fuel System Treatment and Stabilizer, OR

1 fl oz. (30 mL) Mercury or Quicksilver Fuel System Treatment and Stabilizer
Concentrate.

New Fogging Procedure

1. Disconnect and plug boat’s fuel line from Water Separating Fuel Filter inlet.

2. Connect remote outboard fuel tank (with the fogging mixture) to the inlet of the Water Separating Fuel Filter. IMPORTANT: If the boat is out of the water, follow instructions for running engine on flush device as found in service manual for the engine being fogged.

3. a. Cool Fuel models: Start and run engine at 1300 rpm for 5 minutes.
b. VST models: Start and run engine at 1300 rpm for 10 minutes.

4. After specified running time is complete, slowly return throttle to idle rpm and shut engine off.

IMPORTANT: Do not run engine’s fuel system dry of this fogging mixture in the 6 US
gal (23 L) remote outboard fuel tank"

I would imagine you use your o

I would imagine you use your old water separating filter to fog with and install a new one after your done. I have never fogged any of my engines though. Tried it once on a skidoo years back and the thing was so hard to start in the spring I vowed never to do that again. Nowadays I crank the motor every 3 months or so. If its going to sit for awhile I'll spray a little WD40 down the cylinders. Never had any problems.

"Sledderdoc- It must be much colder out west there than what it is over here in Ont. if you're getting your skidoo out in the spring. Thats when I get my ATV's out and yes they're a little tough to start when they have been fogged in the fall.

I fog every thing I own right dowm to the roto-tiller and generator, because they only get used once or twice a year. But something with an electric start is much easier on the shoulder to getting going at the beginning of the next season.

B Mac - I've seen the video that Sledderdoc is talking about and its filled with good advice. Another method with that pail of yours is to put a longer hose on it and put the pail up on your swim platform (or whatever you have up above the outdrive). That will help the pump get a prime on the AF.

"Wrench I get more of a kick starting my stuff I guess. Nothing like a cold beer starting your sled in June, smelling that great 2 stroke exhaust and dream of mountain riding. Then having your wife yell at you for stinking up the house. I ride ATVs year round plus my snowplows on one. But little stuff like weed wackers, lawnmowers etc. I run them dry, drain the carb float spray some WD40 down the cylinder and done! Never ever had a problem. My weedwacker that I bought reconditioned 10 yrs. ago still runs like it was new. Lawnmower after last winter started on the first pull! The boat I didn't do because its too big of a pain to do it on an fuel injected model. Easier to remove plugs and spray a little WD down there. PS sled didn't have electric start back then took 4 hrs of swearing and pulling! Just bought a new summit though and it does have electric start! I'm too old to be pull starting a sled at 7500ft. anymore! lol

You guys are lucky out east with snow. Last year we didn't ride around home till late march ... no snow! can you believe it. Guess thats why we need to start our sleds in spring ha ha.

"Sledderdoc...

7500 ft. sounds great. I'd love to see those mountains. I've never been farther west than Winnipeg. I live on the edge of a small rural community and back onto farm land. The land around here is all pretty flat. Plenty of snow, but insurance rates and the cost of trail permits kinda wreck any fun you would have sledding.

One of my quads is a pull start and it can take a little bit of pulling and some swearing to get that guy going in the spring.

"Watched the video...Thanks sl

"Watched the video...Thanks sledderdoc. I tried the swim platform wrench, but that didn't do the trick either so it looks like tomorrow I'll follow the video method and just dump the AF in the hoses. Ran it and drained it today before the rain started here in Maine. Tried fogging today by spraying half a can of fogging oil into the throat. Didn't seem to get a lot of smoke but the engine started running a bit rough so I guess it probably got to the cylinders ok. Think I should try the remote can trick? Thanks for all the advice."

Sledderdoc...
Looks absolutely beautiful. We don't have anything like that around here. But we do get about 4ft of snow. Too much for me.

are you supposed to spray fogg

are you supposed to spray fogging into the throttle body? I thought it caused clogging of the injectors.

I was buying my supplies at the local dealer and the Startron fuel stabilizer had fogging agent in it. That is what I'm going to use this year.
