hello fella's, I have a 1999 Merc 175efi that smokes terribly on startup. Its a cloud that surrounds the boat. It clears up in a few minutes and runs fine. Each time I stop on lake for more than a few minutes it smokes again. Is there any way oil can siphon into engine when stopped r will faulty oil pump cause this?Thank you.

My error, i googled the engine after Flyingscott answer.
Not uncommon for strokers to smoke, but am not familiar with efi strokers as i assume they do not have a 'choke' as such?

yes most 2 stroke puff out a bit of smoke when started cold but this looks like the boat is on fire. and it did not do it first 17 years of its life.

Possibly as you said then, pump letting through when idle.
Maybe either see how costly/easy it is to replace the pump or wait for someone better informed to post on here or else get someone local to have a look?

Yes...... a bad check valve that pressurizes the oil tank will force oil into the VST tank. This over rich mixture will smoke like crazy till new fuel entering tank leans it out...several minutes time. To repair replace the check valve on block.

Thanks faztbullet, that is something I never thought to check. have already replaced oil pump and no change. I will let you know how we make out.
