90hp Johnson running warm

I have a 2000 90HP Johnson 2stroke I have a couple questions.
The guy I bought the boat from took off direct injection and told me to mix oil to gas 50:1 is that correct ? Also the motor has a steady stream of water peeing out when running just seems to stay pretty warm 90% of the time not sure why and when I pick up the boat out of the water and locking it down on the trailer they still have a little smoke coming from the exhaust is this normal ? I put the ears on the motor and run fresh water threw it after every trip and I noticed water comes out of two holes one by the plug where you check the lower unit oil and the other above that same hole on the overhead is this normal ? I’m fairly new to maintaining a outboard motor so any help is appreciated.

Are you getting an overheat alarm , yes or no ?-----Have you tested the overheat alarm ?-----Water will run out everywhere when running on a hose in the driveway.

No alarm is going off it makes a beep when I first start it but thats it. How do I check the over heat alarm ?

To check the alarm find the tan wire going to a temp sender on a cylinder head. Disconnect the sender, turn on the key and ground out the wire coming from the harness. At that time the horn should sound if all okay.

Ok thanks I will try that tomorrow.

It is important to be clear.-------Direct injection and oil injection are 2 totally different systems.----Model # of your motor is ??-----You can NOT mix gas and oil on a DIRECT INJECTION motor.

Facts for you.-----We can not see your motor.-----We were not able to verify that your motor is a 2000 model.-----You stated " direct injection " on your motor.--------So now that you posted clearer information I can safely say that you are good to go with mixing at 50:1.------Not all motors " are the same " today !!----I am quite sure that one day we will see a post as follows.-------" I am mixing gas and oil at 50:1 but my 2 stroke motor seized up "----And that is because some motors ( 2 stroke ) operate like a 4 stroke with computer help !!

Yes, with the OIL INJECTION (OMS system) removed or blocked off, 50:1 is the correct mix ratio.

The steady stream is the overboard indicator and is a way for the operator to confirm the water pump is working. A little warm is just fine after the engine reaches operating temperature. I always recommend when you buy a used outboard to install a new water pump. This device is the lifeblood of the engine and if you have a weak or damaged impeller you can overheat the engine quickly. http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC5001594 This is $70 of solid insurance and is not that difficult to install.

Perfectly normal.

Those are weep holes for the cooling system. Outboards are self-draining allowing all the cooling water to exit the system so you don't run the risk of freezing.

- Install a fresh set of Champion QL78YC spark plugs.
- Drain the lower unit and refill with Evinrude HPF Pro or equivalent lower unit gear oil. DO NOT USE AUTOMOTIVE GEAR OIL. Outboard gear oil contains emulsifiers to keep any moisture in suspension and reduce gear corrosion.
- Use new washers on the gear oil fill screw and vent screw.
- Use fresh gas in the tank in case it has sat for a while.

I meant or might have typed it wrong sorry, The previous owner took off the oil container that was attached to the motor that injects the oil into the motor he called it direct injection of the oil and told me to mix 50:1 in gas and thats what I been doing, The motor runs good and strong has 135 compression on all 4 cylinders and has 4 carburetors. Its a 2000 model 90HP 2stroke I looked up the model to verify.

Ok Thanks for the info, I wanna change the two thermostats also, can I pull the thermostats and put the garden hose in the hole and back wash any trash that might have gotten inside ?

No need to do that. The overboard indicator will unthread. The female fitting that is left is standard hose thread. You can attach a garden hose to that fitting and backflush the engine that way.

A2000 model with 2000 boat harness will not sound the horn doing this testonly turn on the heat lamp on tach. With motor running short any tan wire to check horn and the circuit for that particular tan wire.
