Hi there everyone i purchased an 88 bayliner with a 2.3 liter ford motor that was quite sick i am in the process of replacing it with a doner motor i found from an 89 ford mustang that is fuel injected. ok with that said i would like to keep the fuel injection i am pretty machanicly inclined and i have the help of a certified car mechanic for the sticky parts. is it ok to do this? And how many other things are going to be deal breakers on putting a car motor in a boat? thanks for any help

Fine if you're going to use the boat only on the road. If you want to use it on water you have to put the marine parts on it from the dead engine. That includes the camshaft. Forget the FI, way wrong for a marine engine.

Well thanks for the info but can you explain a little more about why the fi is a big no-no? I am swaping all parts from dead one but hadnt planned on cam but i can if i have to, again what is the main reason for this? thanks again for the info.

automotive smog era cam will rob you of so much power, you may never get the boat on plane.
The 89 Mustang 2.3 made around 90HP, the marine version was rated at 128HP

that automotive camshaft may also allow exhaust water into the combustion chambers at low rpm's due to the overlap of intake and exh valve opening- a phenomenon in marine engines called "reversion"
Marine camshaft grinds prevent this
plus, none of the electric or fuel system parts are rated for safe use in a marine environment. (SAE J1171)

ok thank you very much. will i be able to put the marine cam in the automotive motor without having to change the heads or anything to drastic?

swapping cams in this engine is pretty easy at least in my opinion. but if the head is good I would swap the entire head. I believe that the intake ports on the 89 mustang motor are not the D port head and they do not flow as well and this could cost you some horse power with the engine out swapping heads is easy and a gasket set is not very exoensive. with the engine out and the head removed it is always a good ideal to have it checked and the valves done better to do it now than to have to do it later
