88 70 hp 3 cyl Type V CDI No Spark (wrong stator?)

Good morning, new to forum and new to boats (but not new to engines, ignition systems, electronics, 28 years ASE Master Automobile Tech so I'll understand at least a little of what you might say to me :)
One of my sons just bought a little bass boat with a 70hp 3 cyl Merc, pretty sure it's the Type V CDI ignition. The stator has 7 wires. All wiring diagrams we can find do not show the 7 wires (typically 4 or 5 wires shown). The 2 extra (smaller gage yellow) were either cut along time ago (actual wire inside the insulation is dirty/discolored) or they broke a long time ago. Any chance this thing wouldn't start (no spark) and the previous owner got advice that the 4 cyl stator would work fine so he bought one used and put it on? And if that was acceptable advice, what's the next best step for investigating no spark when resistance tests are turning out OK?
We've run many of the resistance tests (OK so far) and visually inspected the wiring that we readily are able to inspect but I don't want to invest too much time when I'm not sure what's going on with this stator.
Any advice appreciated and any good guidance accepted.

It was known as a black stator. You have too many wires there. Wrong stator. There should only be two from the stator and four from the trigger. Blue and red are the ign charge coils. blue is lo-speed and red is hi-speed. The yellow leads are the alternator/rectifier to charge the boat battery.

The compression will be ~120 psi.

IF you do get it running like that you may melt a cast a piston from pinging and detonation. (spark advance/timing error)
2 stroke=2 times the heat in the cylinder. 2 or 3 degress of advance is enough to damage something. (~500 degrees more heat.) Triple check the spark settings if some else worked on it first.

The CDI replacement stator has 7 wires, you just ground the red/blue you dont use as it a 2/3/4cylinder replacement kit. The 7th is blk and a ground or someone installed a 4 cylinder stator as you suggested...
 
Normally, the yellow wires coming from the stator are for battery charging. The red and blue wires provide the volts for the ignition system. Not sure what CDI does with their extra wires!

Hey folks, thanks for the help so far. We've been busy and have hardly touched the boat but are trying to get back to it. Here's the latest:
First, to review, this has a 7-wire stator, no wires have tracers or colored stripes, there are 4 yellow, 1 red, 1 blue, 1 black. 2 of the yellow wires have been cut.
Now, part of my confusion is coming from the fact that the instructions from cdielectronics in faztbullet's post (thanks faztbullet!) are as follows:

"6. Connect the new stator’s Yellow wires to the regulator/rectifier (ignore any stripes on the rectifier/regulator as the new
stator does not require the Yellow wires to be connected to a particular rectifier/regulator wire).
7. Connect the Red and Blue wires to the switch box (also, connect the Red/White and Blue/White wires to the switch
box if the engine has either two or four cylinders).
8. Connect the Red/White and Blue/White wires to engine ground if the engine is a three cylinder."

So, one of the problems I'm having is that there is no Red/White or Blue/White wire.

I'm getting so much conflicting information (but don't mistake, I'm very grateful for everyone's contributions thus far).

One other question, is there a factory CDI ignition? I didn't realize there was a CDI Electronics Co. Is that an aftermarket product? I know there were Capacitive Discharge Ignition systems on cars. That's what I thought this was. It seems as though there may be an aftermarket company as well?

thanks again for your help. Just help me understand one thing, I'm a little confused. Did you mean to say that the stator has 4 wires and the trigger has 2 wires? I just want to be sure I'm not confusing my parts I'm asking about.

For stock Merc parts, the trigger coil has four wires: brown, white, violet, and black. The stator has 2 (ignition related) wires: red and blue. All of these wires go to coils, meaning that each connection (ground and/ or companion wire) MUST show conductivity. If any of them are open circuit, the part is scrap.
