8.1 Seawater pump leaking - best solution?

I am weighing my options and needing to make a decision. New Mercruiser pump (part #8M0139994) is about $800. I could try to rebuild but have little confidence and kit is about $200 from what I have seen. Is there a difference in my pump and the 8M0139995? I have to think there is but they certainly look identical from what I can tell. The '5' is about $200 less than the '4'. Has anyone used a pump from ebay or amazon. These are available in my part number by manufacturer 'unknown' for about $320?

I guess the question becomes how much are you willing to gamble that an aftermarket pump will be as good as the original? An overheat and the resulting damage can make you wish you'd just spent the money for the right part in the first place.

Yes with the self destructing impellers, unknown metallurgy, and file-to-fit. So worth it on an engine that will cost 20K to replace.

Searching for overheating on a boating forum will bring up several issues with raw water pumps, but which one talks about the one in post 4?

IF the pump is leaking from the drive shaft to the pulley, you need to replace the bearing(s) and seals... NOT a job unless you have the tools.
I ended up buying a used pump in good condition from ebay and replacing its impeller.

Look nobody's telling you what to do. It's your boat, your money, and your decision. The expert opinion is to buy genuine and that's all I am saying.
