70's hydra electric 60hp

I'll try to keep this short and to the point.

I recently purchased a neat and tidy little boat from a deceased estate.

On the back is a Johnson hydra electric 60hp.

No one new what the old boy had been up to but he had the throttle cable out when he passed away.

The executor had the cable reinstated but they discovered it was starting in forward, no neutral, no reverse.

So I bought it for a song. It was fairly obvious to me the old boy had loved this boat and everything about it screams he was a serious boatie who maintained his gear, under the cover the engine is in remarkable condition for its age and when I took it out for a little spin, asides from a hard start issue which I would suspect has to do with starting in forward the engine purred like a lion and went like a bat outa hell across the water.

(I've read all there is to read on the forum and I would like to thank all the knowledgeable people who contributed that information.)

I have isolated the problem to the lower end, the blue solenoid lead is reading 5.9ohms the green is reading 1.2 ohms.

I've also drained the gear case and found more than a little milky oil in it, I would describe it more as pancake batter, which would entirely explain why the gears are not shifting.

but; the ohms reading has me a little perplexed.

My question is this;

Does the ohms reading on the green lead (assuming the lead is good to the solenoid) mean that the solenoid is stuffed?

Could the pancake mixture interfere with the operation of the solenoid and cause it to not reset with this engines setup.

Also it appears the drain screws have no washers or seals on them, would that be a likely cause for the water being inv the gear case?

Yes as it interferes with internal pump pressure and if it had this mixture in it before it could cause piston to stick....

Yes...and unit requires electric shift oil.

Both solenoids should read the same.------------You need to remove the lower unit to install a new water pump impeller.------So look for wiring issue then .----Also test lower unit shift before installing it again.--------Yes that can be done and is very simple.

Awesome, thanks for the replies guys. This is good advice. I'm going to pull the unit and install a new impeller. Lucky for us we have a real good evinrude dealer in town that stocks loads of old Johnson spares.
