"Hi guys, new to forum. I just bought a 1979 15' Skeeter fishing boat with a 65hp Johnson. It says 50th anniversary series on the front of the engine cover and hydro-electric drive on the back. Am I right in thinking this is a 1973 model motor? I have a couple of problems I'm hoping someone can help me with. First, when you turn the key, the solenoid just clicks. I have 12 volts t the solenoid but nothing coming out. I assume the solenoid is bad. Is this correct? We jumped from battery to starter to start the motor to try the boat. It ran pretty smooth at what felt like around 30mph but reverse wouldn"t work. It seemed like the prop was turning but speed didn't increase with throttle, it just barely moved. Previous owner lost the prop last year and replaced it with a new one and said reverse had't worked since. Could he have also lost a thrust washer or something to cause this or maybe the lower unit is low on oil? During a search on this forum I found the procedure to check the lower unit solenoids but haven't had a chance to check that since I just got it 2 days ago. He also replaced the reverse switch a couple of years ago. Any and all information and advice would be greatly appreciated. Would 50:1 fuel/oil mixture be right? Thanks. Steve"

The 73 had mechanical shift---

The 73 had mechanical shift---Thus your motor is a 72 model.----Electric shift is a good system.

These motors must be turning in order for the oil pump to provide pressure to shift.12 volts to green puts it in nuetral and 12 volts to both green and blue puts it in reverse.Water in the oil is a no-no.No reverse may mean a sticky piston or low oil pressure.

"Thanks. The motor was running

"Thanks. The motor was running when trying to put it in reverse. I just replaced the solenoid and took care of that problem. The blue wire was almost cut into, I've repaired that and getting ready to go to the lake and try it. Voltage seems good so maybe I need to check into a stuck piston or oil pressure problem. Thanks again."
