50hp gearcase rebuild

Hi fellas,
Working on a lower unit for a 50hp Evinrude 1998 2 stroke. I’m following the reinstallation instructions and have hit a snag. The instructions indicate that I should re-install the pinion bearing to the same depth in the prop housing as before…thing is, there WAS no “before.” The bearing was torn apart by who knows what (likely no gear oil). Any suggestions on how far to press in that bearing where there is no previous measurement available?

Love some of the " ewe tubers "----Just a bunch of guesses and assumptions.-----Is there a screw on the side of this gearcase that prevents the bearing from rising due to oil pressure ??? ----Hopefully that fellow pressed the bearing in with numbers facing water pump.

I haven’t pressed it in yet but yes, I plan to have numbers facing up. Yes there is a screw for such a purpose. How close do I need to get it to where the bearing was? Just trying to figure out why the exact depth is so critical.
